It is not easy to handle and to take care of a child diagnosed to have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Everyday parents struggle to maintain their cool and extend their patience to the maximum in doing parent duties to their child. But if parents have a hard time, the more there child is. These children need all the love and support and the best persons to give him that is you.
Yes, taking care of a child with ADHD is hard, but with the love you have for your child, you surely can successfully take good care of him. Here are the ways on how to take care of a child with ADHD:
- Accept your child. Never do self pity, instead make your child feel that he is accepted and well loved in the family just like his other siblings. Making them feel that they are no different from others will help them function well little by little.
- If you are not available to take care of your child, make sure that the caregiver knows the condition of your child. Sometimes, they can become very impatient and scold your child when they are not behaving appropriately which can aggravate the child to become angry and disappointed.
- Be firm and structured especially when giving instructions. These types of children rely much on you especially when it comes to doing what is right and wrong. Make sure that you have clearly stated what is right from wrong because that is what they would follow. Just make sure that you have instructed the rules to them in a simple manner so that they can well understand it.
- Always give compliments and rewards if they have done something good. Even a hug for being behaved while in church will make them feel good and they will desire to be well behaved the next time.
- When making assignments from school, tell your child your child that you need to finish it for the night and after that he can rest. Tell your child that there won’t be any other activity until his assignment is done. They can be impulsive once you have not set rules, so be firm as much as possible.
- When you are not happy with how he behaved, tell them. In this way they can understand that what they did was wrong and in turn they will not do it again.
- Make sure that your child knows the consequence of his actions. For example if he will destroy the toys of his siblings, his siblings will be sad and cry. When they do not want the consequence of their actions, then there is a big chance that the child with ADHD won’t do such actions.
- Seek professional help. It is not just the child who needs to go the doctor, you should too. You need to have professional advice especially when you have a child with ADHD. What you think is good may not be medically recommended, so it is always best to ask from the experts.
- Join support groups. Being a parent with ADHD is hard because of their special needs. Having people around you who knows what you are going through will give you the confidence and assurance that you can also be a successful parent to a child with ADHD.
