Helping Your Overweight Child to Weigh Normal

Over the years the children who are obese are growing by the number. This may not come as a shock anymore as many kids are engaged in playing video games and watch television all day long rather than engaging in sports and playing outside. Parents are also very busy to prepare nutritious foods for their children making these kids eat junk foods that are readily available. That is why it is to no wonder why the children of today weigh heavier as compared to the children who are born ten or twenty years ago.

Some parents think that when their child is heavy, it means he is healthy. On the contrary, child obesity is linked to a lot of diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers. The earlier you control your child and correct his weight, the greater chances he has in preventing the occurrence of those diseases mentioned above.

Here are some of the ways on how you can help your overweight child to weigh normal:

  • Weigh your child and tell him what his normal weight should be. When your child knows how heavy he should weigh, he will know how to control his appetite.
  • Set realistic goals with your child. As much as possible let your child decide on how much weight he needs to lose and what diet regimen he should be into.
  • In a calm and friendly manner inform your child about the harmful effects that obesity can do to his health. Make sure that your child understands your point without giving him fear.
  • Prepare healthy foods at home. When you want your child to weigh normal, the foods served at home should be healthy as much as possible, fatty foods should be eliminated. Modify your menu so that your child won’t feel left alone thinking that he is the only one eating vegetables and other healthy dishes.
  • Exercise together. Every day you can have a thirty minute walk around the neighborhood at a time where both of you are free. During weekends you can also plan different sport activities together with the rest of the family like cycling and having ballgames at the park. You are like hitting two birds at one stone by doing these; you are encouraging your child to exercise plus you are having bonding moments with the family.
  • Prepare his lunch and snacks for school. Make sure that the foods you are preparing are less in fat. Try other food preparations that are healthy yet it still makes the food of your child tasty. Instead on frying, you can try grill or steam in cooking. In making sandwiches for snacks, use dressings that are low in fat.
  • Limit dining out to fast food restaurants at least twice in a week. Yes the foods served at most fast food restaurants are unhealthy, but your child needs to have a break too. They also need to be like other children who miss eating burgers and fries. Just tell your child that eating these foods once in a while is okay just as long he doesn’t go for second serving and added dressings.
  • Weigh your child weekly. In this way both of you will know if he is progressing in achieving his goals or not. If he is losing weight, give him rewards. A simple hug and words saying that you are proud of him will surely make him happy. If he did not lose weight, comfort him and tell him not to give up. Children can be depressed when their goals are not met so it is best to reassure them that they can achieve them next time.

Your role as a parent is really very important in having your child maintain a healthy weight. Your child’s health greatly affects how you advocate being healthy in the family.

The Reasons behind Your Child’s Bedwetting

Bedwetting is very common in young children. You meet friends who are parents themselves who have similar stories to tell about their children peeing in the middle of the night while on bed. While bedwetting is common, it is important to know what the cause why your child pees in bed so that you address the cause and help your child not to bed wet anymore.

Your child can be bedwetting due to different reasons. Categorically the reasons can be divided into two. The first category does not prove health threat and the second one makes bedwetting a sign of more serious conditions. Here are the most common reasons behind your child’s bedwetting:

Causes of Bedwetting That Does Not Prove Health Threat:

  • The child can bed wet due to physical activities during the day. When the child is exhausted from too much play, he is prone to have bedwetting.
  • Your child can have bedwetting when he is in a sort of developmental delay. Although at the age of three to five, children are expected to know how to control their bladder, this may not be the case for most children. Some still has not developed to do this task, so in turn they still bed wet at night.
  • Drinking too many liquids before bedtime can increase chances of bedwetting. Their bladders are already full and most of the time they are in deep sleep making them unable to wake up when needed to pee.
  • The child is still unable to hold his bladder in daytime, much more during sleep.
  • Children who used to bed wet as a child have higher chances of bedwetting as compared to children whose parents do not. There are studies that link bedwetting to be sometimes hereditary.

Causes of Bedwetting Link to Certain Conditions:

  • Children with juvenile diabetes bed wet as a symptom of the disease. Just like in adults, children diagnosed to have the condition are prone to bedwetting as the body gets rid of the excess blood sugar in the bloodstream.
  • When your child has urinary tract infection, he is prone to have bedwetting.
  • Children who have frequent bedwetting may have anomalies in the structure of his urinary system.
  • When a child has neurological disorders, he may have a hard time in holding urine especially during sleep.
  • When children are under emotional stress, they are prone to have bedwetting. Problems in the family, bullying from playmates, and poor performance in school can cause the child to be under stress making him prone to bedwetting.

Helping My Daughter in Losing Weight

Being overweight much more obese won’t do good to the body. Weighing more than expected makes one prone to have conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers. That is why everyone is encouraged to weigh what is normal for his height so as to prevent the diseases mentioned above. But weight problems seem to be a growing problem today even in children. As a matter of fact childhood obesity is very rampant now a day. Parents are often worried on what would be the health consequences that being obese gives their daughter.

Female children who are overweight are prone to have early onset of menses can lead her to have gynecological problems later on aside from the conditions mentioned above. Recognizing the harmful effects that being overweight gives their daughters; many parents want to do something on their child’s weight. Here are some of the ways on how you can help your daughters lose weight:

  • Before starting any diet and exercise regimen for your daughter, bring your daughter to the pediatrician first. The doctor will still have to assess your daughter and recommend on how much weight she should lose in order to be healthier.
  • Inform your daughter on the harmful effects that being obese or overweight gives the health. In this way you can have her to cooperate on making her shed the extra weight.
  • Bring her when you shop for the groceries and orient her on reading the nutritional labels that are found on foods. Teach her that the lower the calories, the healthier it is for the body. When she wants to buy junk foods and chips, make her choose the healthier variety like vegetable crackers. This is enough to satisfy her cravings from the foods that she usually loves to eat.
  •  Involve your daughter in planning her healthy meals. In this way you will know what you will be letting her eat are foods that she will surely eat.
  • Let your daughter be engaged in sports. When she has regular exercise routine, your child will be losing weight. If your daughter isn’t much into sport activities, then you can enroll on her dance classes. In this way she is not burning those unwanted calories, but also learning a new skill that she will enjoy.
  • Be your daughter’s diet partner. When you join your daughter with the goal of becoming healthy, then it is like hitting two birds at one stone. It is not just your daughter who is gaining the benefits of diet and exercise, you are too.

Encouraging them to be healthy, will be one of the best things that you can do for your daughter.
