Health Benefits of Yoga in Children

Exercise is very much important in a person’s life no matter how old he may be. That is why even as a child, practicing an exercise routine is encouraged for the health benefits it gives. Starting healthy habits early on in life helps prevent diseases from hitting the body. And engaging your child to exercise will serve as one of the greatest teachings you have imparted as a parent.

One of the best forms of exercise that a lot of people have been engaged to is yoga. Yoga is a form of both physical and mental exercise that originally came from India. Because of the undeniable benefits it gives the body, yoga has been practiced to most countries in the world including the West.

Recognizing the advantages that yoga gives the health, many parents want their children to be practicing that form of exercise too. Just like adults, children get a lot of gains from doing yoga. Here are some of the health benefits of yoga in children:

School can be very tiring for children especially when there are so many pressures that get on the way. Practicing yoga will help your child handle these stresses well so that he can have a more relaxed state of mind needed for him to function well in school and his other social activities.
  • Because of the value of balance that it teaches. Yoga is very good in helping children to battle from depression. Many children are depressed at an early age because of parents failed marriage and peer pressure that is very common in school. Yoga will teach your child to become well rounded individuals as his mental health is developed.
  • Children who are diagnosed to have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are encouraged to do yoga because the inner balance that it teaches help the child to become behaved, concentrate on activities, and have improved physical health.
  • Yoga will help the child be healthy as it promotes proper blood circulation to all parts of the body.

Signs of Child Depression

Majority of us would agree that several happy moments in our lives happened during our childhood years. As a typical child, all we do is play, have fun and not worry about the world around us. We just go about with our lives, learning new experiences, seeing things with innocence and living without any pretentions. Our childhood is filled with a lot of pleasant and unforgettable memories, which we’ll carry for the rest of our lives.

In general life can be compared to a spinning wheel, sometimes the person is on top, and sometimes he’s down at the bottom. This saying also applies in children. Children have their highs and lows too; at times they can be very ecstatic and happy, but in sometimes they can feel very sad and depressed. Children, like adults can also experience psychological disturbances and depression. It is very important to see these signs, because children tend to be less articulate in expressing their feelings and emotions. At times they do not even realize that they’re already depressed, which makes identifying childhood depression very crucial. What are the signs of a depressed child?

Signs of depression in children can be divided into 4 different categories. These categories include physical signs, emotional signs, cognitive signs and behavioral changes. The physical signs of a depressed child cover his appearance; he might gain or lose weight and become excessively skinny or obese because of changes in appetite. A depressed child might eat non-stop or not eat at all. The child may also appear sleepless and tired because of sleep disturbances. He will experience insomnia and nightmares. He will also become very irritable and easily agitated with just about anything. Emotional signs of a depressed child focus on his feelings, this child will feel unusually sad, hopeless and cries easily. These feeling are not triggered by any cause. He might also become very anxious, tense and panicky as well as disinterested with play activities or anything pleasurable. The cognitive signs of a depressed child include the following, difficulty organizing thoughts (problems with memory and attention), negative or pessimistic outlook in life, feelings of worthlessness and guilt (depressed children view themselves as worthless failures), feelings of helplessness and hopelessness (they feel that the state of depression is permanent), feelings of isolation (they stay away from peers and spend most of their time alone), and suicidal thought (depressed children considers death as a way to end their suffering). A depressed child will always feel sad which brings on negative thoughts. The behavioral signs of childhood depression are the easiest to detect and observe. These signs would include, avoidance and withdrawal (depressed children withdraw from friends and family), being demanding (these children have very major insecurities and will excessively depend on others to cope), restlessness (a depressed child always act up and show reckless behavior), and self-harm (self-inflicted injuries).

The way signs and symptoms of depression are manifested, varies in each child. Having an idea on what to expect and observe in a depressed child is very helpful in identifying the disorder and treating it before it becomes worse.
