(United Kingdom): A psychologist told Members of Parliament yesterday that children under 3 years old should not be allowed to watch TV at all as it can adversely affect their linguistic and social development. It could also pose increased health risks such as obesity, ADHD and autism.

Dr A Sigman, a member of the Institute of Biology and a British Psychological Society fellow, believed that 90 minutes of television a day is enough to cause such damage.

The doctor also mentioned that children aged between 3 and 7 years should only be allowed 30 minutes to an hour’s worth of television a day.

A new study has shown that children with ADHDÂ are almost 4 times more likely to be bullies. On the flipside, these same kids were found to be almost 10 times more likely to be the victims of bullying prior to being bullies themselves.

The year-long study involved all 4th graders in a school in Stockholm.

It was felt the study might help parents and teachers appreciate the possibility of other underlining factors affecting a child with ADHD, beyond the obvious behavioural and attention issues.

However, it was also felt treating ADHD wouldn’t treat the bullying as ADHD drugs improve a child’s concentration span but don’t deal with the aggression that could lead to bullying.

Taijiquan, sometimes known as Tai Chi Chuan, is a Chinese martial art known for its health and spiritual benefits. Regular taijiquan practise leads to an increased conscious control of ones body. Taijiquan theory is based on relaxation of muscle to create power rather than tension, this makes the sport one of the more gentle martial arts.

Taijiquan practise has many health benefits, both for body and mind. In children, taijiquan has been shown to reduce problems such as hyperactivity and ADD through its relaxation and control techniques. Improvements are made to the cardiovascular health, and, as with any physical activity, a healthy weight is easier to achieve and maintain. Other benefits for children include improved sleep patterns and a decreased susceptibility to depression, anxiety and mental illness.

Taijiquan can be practiced by the young and old, and is an excellent family activity. Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to join a Taijiquan club for the good of your families health?
