Allergic Reactions in Children

There are many things that can cause allergic reactions in children as well as in adults. Some of the most common allergens include pollen food, medication, insect bites or stings among several others. Most allergic reactions are not life threatening but some children may have severe reactions that will require a doctors attention.

Symptoms and signs of allergic reactions include itching, skin turning red in the area of contact, possible swelling in the area of contact, stuffy or runny nose, watery and itchy eyes, red bumps called hives any place on the body. Severe allergic reactions include problems swallowing or talking, swelling around the face or mouth, problems breathing or wheezing, dizziness, fainting, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

If your child has any of the symptoms that are listed as severe then you should seek medical attention immediately. If the signs or symptoms are mild, you can give a medication like Benadryl. There are also Benadryl sticks available for insect bites. If you have your first aid kit and you know that your child has allergic reactions that are severe, you should have an injection of epinephrine available for these cases.

Once you have learned of any items that cause an allergic reaction with your child you will be better able to stay away from those items or be better prepared in case of a reaction. If you know your child is allergic to pollen you can give them medication prior to going outside and this will relief many of your worries.
