There are a fairly large number of children who sleepwalk. Many studies have stated that sleepwalking mostly occurs in children between the ages of five and thirteen; however, it is possible for anyone of any age to have a sleepwalking problem.
Sleep walking happens when a child rises from sleep without really waking up all of the way. They are able to leave their bed and walk around their room or the rest of the home without realizing that they are doing so. It is possible that children who are sleepwalking can open up doors, closets, cupboards, and more. The majority of children do not remember sleepwalking the next morning. Sometimes a parent or another family member will find the child sleepwalking and return him or her back to their bed, but other times sleepwalking can be dangerous.
Since a number of children are able to open up doors and closets there is the potential for children getting into a room that may not be childproof or they could even end up outside. The dangerous associated with sleepwalking are extremely dangerous and in a small number of cases deadly. Parents, with children off all ages, are encouraged to make sure that all doors are locked and that stairways are protected with baby gates. This will prevent a sleep walking child from falling down a stairway or ending up outside.
There are a number of things that a parent can do at home to help minimize the dangers associated with sleepwalking, but a physician may need to do the rest. With children who regularly sleepwalk a doctor may prescribe a medication to help them sleep better and reduce the amount of sleeping walking episodes. Sleepwalking is a serious issue that should be dealt with right away. If your child has been sleepwalking or if they just started schedule an appointment with their physician to get the treatment started.

While sleep deprivation is a serious issue that affects quite a few children is there is another sleep issue that is the complete opposite of deprivation, but still just as dangerous. Narcolepsy is when an individual has uncontrollable urges to sleep. Narcolepsy is found in children and teenagers all around the world.
Narcolepsy can make a child want to fall asleep just about all of the time. Even after a child takes a long nap narcolepsy causes the child to feel sleepy again in a few more hours. Children with an advanced case of narcolepsy may be putting their body and health at risk. Once the body beings to feel sleepy the body and all of the body muscles tend to relax. This may lead to a child collapsing or falling out of a chair. The amount of danger will depend on where the child is when the episode occurs. It is not uncommon for narcolepsy to occur when a child is playing with their friends, at school, or just hanging out at home.
Parents who notice a change in their child’s sleep pattern are encouraged to first discuss the change with their child. Ask them if they feel tired all of the time and if there is something that they can do to feel more awake besides going to sleep. If you children states that the only way to stop feeling tired by getting some sleep you may want to take your child to their doctor. Narcolepsy is a condition that will not go away and it is sometimes untreatable, but a physician may be able to offer a parent and their child helpful tips on how to manage and deal with the problem.

Regardless of whether or not you are a parent you know what nightmares are. It is highly likely that when you were younger you had them. Do you remember waking up in the middle of the night scared thinking that something was wrong? If you are a parent then nightmares are something that can impact your child’s sleep and have an affect on their health.
When a child has a nightmare it is likely that they will scream or even come into your bedroom to wake you up. Older children may be more able to get to you when they believe that they are in trouble, but infant and toddlers may not be able to get out of their crib. Parents whose bedrooms are not near the bedroom of their child should be using a baby monitor. A baby monitor is a way to keep an eye on your child by listening to the noises in their room without actually being there. This is important because if a parent does not hear their child’s cries then this is where nightmares can become a health issue.
If a parent or guardian does not come into their child’s bedroom to care for a scared child they may end up going back to sleep on their own, but a large number of children do not. Sleep deprivation, even if it only lasts one night, can extremely painful for both children and parents. Children without enough sleep are likely to display a mix of different emotions. It is not uncommon for a child without enough sleep to constantly be crying, upset, or confused one minute and then different the next. If a parent tries to get their child to sleep throughout the day it is likely that rest of their daily schedule may be off and it is likely that children will have a difficult time getting back to sleep at night again.
To prevent lack of sleep from occurring parents are encouraged to go to their child if they awake in the middle of the night with a nightmare. Parents should stay with their child and comfort them until they can get back to sleep. You may be sleepy yourself, but only five to ten minutes of your time is likely to make a world of difference the next morning.

From the very first day that an infant is born they are being checked and monitored by a healthcare professional. The first year of a baby’s life if filled with doctor appointments that typically occur once every other month or more. After the first year the number of visits will decline; however, it is still important that parents take their children to their pediatrician for regular checkups.
Regular checkups typically occur once or twice a year. The number of checkups depends on the age of the child in question. If a child was diagnosed with having a certain illness or birth defect they may have to have additional checkups.
It is extremely important that parents do not allow their children to miss their regularly scheduled checkup appointments. Checkups are needed to make sure that children are healthy and that their development is on course. Regular checkups are important for individuals of all ages; however, they are extremely important in infants.
When an infant goes for a regular checkup they will be examined for any growth developments. Many doctors will measure a baby’s head, get their weight, measure their height, check their ears, eyes, and mouth. This is extremely important to do because some growth or developmental problems can be cured or treated when noticed right away.
With busy schedules and hectic lives it is likely that parents may have to cancel at least one of their child’s doctor appointments. Rescheduling is fine, but it is important to make sure that you and your child make it to the rescheduled appointment.

Selecting a pediatrician for your child is a big deal and it could very well be one of the most important decisions in your life. The pediatrician that you select will be monitoring the care of your child so in a way you are place your child’s health in his or her hands. Below are some helpful tips that parents should use when searching for a pediatrician.
Most parents select a pediatrician for their child when they are first born; however, other reasons could arise that could cause parents to look for a new pediatrician for their school aged child. It is a little bit easier to select a pediatrician for older children because you can usually tell right away if your child will like their new doctor. The parents of infants have to use their own best judgment when selecting a pediatrician.
The first step to finding a pediatrician is searching area offices. The closer a that a pediatrician is located to your home the easier it would be to make scheduled appointments or emergency visits. Parents are encouraged to use their local phone book or the internet to find phone number of local pediatricians.
In addition to contacting healthcare offices on their own, many parents ask their family, friends, and coworkers for recommendations. This is a great way to be led in the direction of a great pediatrician. When getting recommendations you should ask your friends or family members how the pediatrician is with their own child and if the child responds well to them. Although good recommendations are nice to hear you will have to make the final decision yourself. The majority of parents use just one pediatrician for their child; however, it is possible for parents to switch pediatricians if they are not happy with the care that their child is receiving.
Once you and your child arrive for their first visit it is important to keep your eyes open. Monitor the actions of the pediatrician and all other office staff members. If the first appointment goes well then you may have found your child’s pediatrician for the next fifteen or so years.

Individuals off all ages have small pauses in their breathing pattern. These small pauses are called apnea. Apnea in typically normal; however, there are some children or infants who are an increased risk of developing health related issues associated with Apnea. The medical world separates apnea into three different categories. They claim that there are obstructive apnea, central apnea, and mixed apnea forms.
Central apnea occurs when the brain is unable to control the breathing process. Central apnea is most commonly found in infants that were born prematurely. When a premature infant is born it is likely that all of their important body parts, including the brain are not yet fully developed.
Obstructive apnea is the most common form of apnea. Obstructive apnea occurs when there is something that is obstructing the airway. This form of apnea most commonly occurs at night because a child’s throat tend to relax at this time which allows tissue organs to block the airway.
Mixed apnea is a combination of both obstructive and central apnea. All forms of apnea can generally be managed or treated. Some children experience slight apnea problems and continue on just fine while others may experience difficultly breathing. Parents who notice their children having a difficult time sleeping or breathing are encouraged to contact their physician right away or take their child to the hospital.
As previously mentioned many cases of apnea will not be life threatening; however, parents should keep an eye on the sleeping habits of their children. Common symptoms of apnea include color changes in the skin and the lips, gasping for air, restless sleep, and snoring.

The flu season is in full swing and depending on where you live you still have up to three months of \ flu season remaining. Individuals, including children, are urged to get their flu shot in September; however, it is sometimes possible for a child to get a flu shot later on in the season.
Flu shots are a great way to protect all kinds of children from getting the flu. Healthcare physicians urge parents to understand that infants aged six months to twenty-four months need a flu shot. This age group is more likely to develop a more serve case of the flu. In recent years when there has been a shortage in flu vaccines many flu clinics were limited only to high risk patients which included infants.
After October or November there are not a large number of flu clinics being offered at local supermarkets or department stores. These clinics are the only way that a number of families can afford to have their child vaccinated from the flu. Parents who make the decision to give their child a flu shot later in the season are usually required to visit their local hospital or physician. It is not a guarantee that these establishments will still have the vaccine available; however, they may be able to point parents in the right direction if they don’t.
Parents are encouraged to keep an eye on the flu season and flu shots beginning around September and October. Many children getting the flu shot for the first time are required to have two separate injections. The flu vaccine needs a few weeks to protect the body from illness; therefore, parents are encouraged to think about their children and the flu vaccine before it is too late.

With flu season in full swing many parents are constantly concerned with the thought of their children becoming sick. Due to school and daycare centers it is highly likely that a child will catch the flu. The flu is a dangerous illness that is highly contagious. The majority of flu cases cannot be prevented in children because one way or another it is likely that children will transfer germs and bacteria to each other; however, there are some steps that parents can take to reduce the likelihood of their children getting sick.
When it comes to school and daycare there are many parents who will not send their child if they are sick or display flu symptoms. Parents always need to keep in mind that just because they would not send a sick child to an establishment where other children will be does not necessarily mean that other parents think the same way. You can do a lot to prevent your children from becoming ill with the flu; however, if they come into contact with a sick child their chances of contracting the flu more than double.
At elementary or middle schools it may be more difficult for parents to keep an eye on other children; however, many parents can keep a tab on the other children at a daycare center. Daycare providers have an obligation to protect the child in their care; however, there are still some providers who accept sick children. Before dropping your child off you are encouraged to ask your daycare provider if any children are showing signs of the flu or another sickness. If there are sick kids at the daycare center parents may want to consider taking their child home for the day. Although parents will have to miss a day or two of work it is much better than contracting the flu, which can actually keep children sick and parents out of work for up to ten days.
Other easy ways that parents can prevent their child from getting the flu is by keeping them away from any of their siblings that may be sick. Do not encourage children to eat or drink from the same cups or plates without first being washed. If someone in the household is sick with the flu or beginning to show some symptoms of the flu it is important that parents disinfect the house. Simply using a disinfecting cloth or a disinfecting spray will eliminate a number of harmful bacteria that could cause a child to become ill with the flu.
